Platform Bed with Storage Drawers: Practical and Trendy
A platform bed with storage drawers is the ultimate in a bed design because it offers extra organizational space for the bedroom, combined with beautiful styling for a trendy look.
There are several types of platform beds that are very popular, but none have the unique functionality and versaility of a platform bed with storage drawers. This particular design is a modern off-shoot of the old nautical-styled captains bed. However, it has a modern twist of being designed with a sleek, low profile bed frame. It also is designed to be used without the need of box springs to support a mattress.
Mattress only, no box springs
Slat base
The base of the bed is built to provide mattress support generally through a slat system or a solid sheet of wood built over the base. Slats tend to give or bend slightly when a person sleeps on the mattress and they have been quite popular in Asian countries as a preferred sleep suport system. The slight resilience of a slat system for sleeping is very comfortable for some users, especially if a very hard mattress or futon is used.
Solid base
Other beds are made with the enclosed base that provides a solid surface on which to place a mattress. A solid surface does not tend to provide any resilience and most people look for mattresses such as latex or synthetic foam that can provide enough softness as well as support. These mattresses are well suited for the platform bed system.
Storage drawers
The most important features of a platform bed with drawers is the amount of organizational space that is built underneath the bed frame. As mentioned earlier, they are similar to the traditional captains bed, but they are generally built as a low profile bed frame and are more contemporary in design.
You can find a variety of organizational features that make this type of bedroom storage furniture exceptionally practical. Some beds are made with a minimal amount of drawers underneath, such as two on either side. This type of frame is still very low profile, while offering extra storage drawers underneath.
On the other hand, you can find a huge amount of storage in queen and king size platform beds with drawers underneath. Some beds are made with one row of 3 drawers on either side, for a total of 6 large drawers. Others are built with the maximum amount of drawers which include two rows of six drawers on either side, for a total of 12 drawers all around. Some beds also offer two more smaller drawers at the foot of the bed, for a total of 14 drawers.
A large bed with drawers underneath is not low profile, since obviously the base must be higher to accommodate the additional storage drawers. However, they are still not uncomfortably high, since a platform bed does not require box springs under the mattress.
Creates additional bedroom floor space
Another benefit to choosing a storage platform bed with a lot of drawers, is the fact that you may not even need any other furniture in the bedroom in which to store your personal items. In fact, these are great for small bedrooms when you want more floor space. You get all the storage you need, while opening up the living space of your bedroom.
