Platform Beds
A platform bed is the modern version of a sleep unit that is designed to be used without a box springs. This bed design can either be constructed as a simple bed frame with or without a headboard, or as a bed with drawers underneath. Platform storage beds are rapidly becoming popular as one of the most often selected contemporary bed on the market, because of the additional storage space built right underneath the frame itself.
Captains Beds
Captains beds are the original version of the now contemporary platform beds just discussed. These beds were designed over a century ago to provide a combination sleep space and storage area for ship's captains. The design caught on in general manufacturing and has constantly evolved until today. It is often the bed of choice for children's rooms, although many adults now love the antique, retro nautical design as well. There are any number of drawer configurations that are built into this particular bed design.
Bunk Beds
The twin or single bed is a common size used in dormitories, children's and teens rooms at home and small urban apartments for single dwellers. You can find a huge variety of twin designs such as bunk beds, L-shaped twin sets, and bunk beds with a full bed on the bottom and a single size on the top.
Loft beds are also a type of bunk bed, except they provide a sleep space at the top and leave the lower area open for a sofa, workstation or a dresser. Bed drawers are also often built into bunk designs because of the superior functionality that this piece of bedroom storage furniture offers.
Adjustable Beds
Adjustable beds are used in hospitals, nursing homes, residential care units, and in residential homes. This type of unit can be adjusted to several positions, but especially in the head and foot area. Even though these types of sleep units are most often used for health related concerns, more and more people prefer them in the home setting simply because they are exceptionally comfortable.
Daybeds
The daybed is often remembered for it's romantic Victorian history, but it is one of the more practical and versatile pieces of bedroom furniture still used today. These beds are often used in guest rooms or small bedrooms that double as an office.
They can be used as a couch, single bed for guests or as a place to rest for an afternoon nap. Some daybeds are constructed with a trundle bed underneath or with a set of underbed drawers for additional storage space.
Cribs
These beds are designed for infants and very young children. You can find them in a variety of styles, colors and finishes. Each is constructed to use a standard size crib mattress. Some contemporary infant beds are 3 in 1 units that can be used as a toddler bed when an infant grows out of the crib size.
Waterbeds
A waterbed got it's 'cool' from the sixties when romance and flower power was at it's cultural apex for hippies and flower children. However, this novelty bed has developed into a healthy, comfortable alternative to the traditional bed that houses a typical mattress. A comfortable waterbed is just that...a mattress filled with water, although there are many different designs available.
Murphy Beds
A Murphy bed is a sleep unit with a frame that is attached to the wall or housed in a special closet, to be opened whenever the occupant wishes to sleep. These are perfect for urban and efficiency apartment dwellers who need to open up their small floor space for other uses during the day. There are many contemporary designs among the stylish Murphy beds.
